Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken in Bali from Kintamani. It features Gunung Agung volcano which is 17km away. Luckily there was a beautiful blanket of fog in the Kintamani crater in the forground.

Time

I got up at 3am to capture this shot driving about 2 hours to get to this spot well before sunrise. On the way there was light rain and at one stage I was tempted to turn around and go home! I persevered and was rewarded by this beautiful sunrise.

Lighting

There was a high dynamic range in this shot between the rising orange sunlight and the foreground cloud blanket that was still in shadow. I took 3 shots at different exposures to blend this final shot

Equipment

Sony A7Mk2 Sony 70-200mm f4.0 Tripod

Inspiration

Gunung Agung is Bali largest volcano. It had been erupting intermittently for the least few weeks. It’s 60 years since last eruption so I was determined to capture this unique event. I travelled up to Kintamani at least 10 times early morning and on two occasions I got some epic shots. 2017. It has not erupted since, thankfully for Bali.

Editing

Yes. Photoshop CS6. Main challenge was to exposure blend this shots to capture what was a high dynamic range scene. I manually blended in Photoshop. I don’t like automated blending software which often gives strange results.

In my camera bag

Sony a7 M2 Batis lenses fixed 18mm, 22mm Sony 24-70 f2.8 Sony 55mm 1.8 Sony 85mm 1.8 Sony 16-24 f4

Feedback

Aim to be in the Right place Right time Right gear And Relax, don’t rush shooting. This needs a lot of planning and a lot of luck. Like fishing!
