Behind The Lens
Location
The photo was taken on location in Cambridge, UK. I'm based in London, so I had to travel quite a distance for this photoshoot.Time
I can remember clearly how this image was captured. After my long journey to Cambridge for this shoot on a cold January day in the UK, I met up with my subject. We had some hot drinks and decided to go to work shooting at some of the beautiful spots around the town center in Cambridge. I remembered that I wasn't really happy with most of the images I was getting as the architecture was competing a lot in the shots. Cambridge is a beautiful town and very picturesque. However, for this shoot, I was more after a portrait. Finally, around 2 pm, we finally found a spot away from the busy crowds and store that was recently closed down. This is the result.Lighting
For lighting, I was going for a natural-looking shot, but it was a cold and overcast afternoon with very low light. The f/1.8 lens I was using would have worked well, but to add more punch to the natural light I used an off-camera with an octagonal softbox. This added some direction to the light.Equipment
This was shot handheld with a Canon 5D Mark IV paired with a Tamron 85mm F/1.8. I also used a Speedlight and octabox.Inspiration
The location was very inspirational for this shot. Firstly, the color of the wall was similar to skin tones, this will really allow the color of my subject's eyes to pop. It also seemed a challenge, making some interesting out of a "boring" location. I love a challenge.Editing
Yes, some post-processing on this image but it wasn't a lot as I was shooting wide open. I played with contrast in Lightroom, and some minor blemish healing in photoshop. I was very fortunate with my subject because she had beautiful skin and makeup. Also, her eyes for me was the main focus of this image, I thought it really keeps you looking at the image, so I sharpened them slightly. In my camera bag
Being that I mostly shoot portraits, I tend to travel very light. For camera body, I take with me a Canon 5D Mark IV and my primary lens is the Tamron 85mm f/1.8. I have heard lots of praises about other lens for portrait, but for me the Tamron 85mm is my buddy. I love the way it renders colors and texture and it is sharp! I also carry a canon 50mm f/1.8, just for when I need more environment. I also have in my bag a flash and a cheap foldable softbox, you never know when you'll need one.Feedback
It's not always necessary to build an elaborate and expensive set to make a good image. Often, all you require is already there around you. Understanding the type of light you're working with, composition and an interesting subject are all you need.
