Behind The Lens

Location

This Photograph was taken in Dhikala Zone of Jim Corbett National Park Situated in Other Region of India

Time

This is probably one of my best clicks amongst other. I remember we saw her and her cub having their meal in morning and we hoped that we might sight them at the same location or near by during our afternoon safari, but both of them were no where to be seen. After searching her whole territory for almost two and a half hours finally at 15:46 of 17/01/2018 we spotted her going back to her cub after quenching her thirst after the meal.

Lighting

Paying more attention to light is perhaps the single most important step you can take to improve your photography. I did the same, it was the lovely winter afternoon and the sun was about to set when she appeared coming towards me from the side direction where the sun was. That made her beautiful coat shine to its peak and I grabbed the the most of her beauty in my camera as I could. That day I actually realised what charms and effects the natural lights can bring in to you photograph if used wisely.

Equipment

This was shot on Cannon 7D with 55-250MM (4-5.6) Lens without any tripod, artificial flash or light.

Inspiration

I saw may beautiful photographs taken by many people of tiger coming towards them and from there i got this inspiration to take a beautiful head-on shot of a tiger in the wild of my own but even after many trips to Jim Corbett I never got the chance to take one, where the tiger is walking towards you. During this trip of mine I got this opportunity to take this shot which i always wanted to take.

Editing

Usually wildlife photography takes a lot of post-processing, luckily in this shot due to perfect natural lighting it just needed a little bit of brightness and sharpness adjustment.

In my camera bag

The first thing I usually pack is my canon 35mm and 55-250mm along with my canon 7D body. After that I pack at least 2-3 extra fully charged batteries just to be extra precocious not to run out of the juice when needed the most. While going for wildlife safari I always keep my sand bag as it provides me with extra stability since keeping up with a tripod on a moving safari jeep is little next to impossible.

Feedback

As I'm still learning the art of wildlife photography, I got to know few important rule that how to take the best out of the limited time period that you have during your safari. First and the most important is patience, you need to be patient enough to wait calmly for that right moment to capture the big cats since no one can predict when and how will you be sighting them. Secondly, if you think that the tiger is around and you might sight them just take some test shot before you actually sight them this will give you the idea of how you shot will come and if needed you can calibrate your settings because in jungle the background and lightings always keeps on changing and lastly always carry a sand bag since in jungle we all use bazooka sized lens which are typically heavy and you can feel tired after holding it for long and this might disturb the shot which you might take. A sand bag in this sort of situation come in as a boon where you can place you lens on it and take a crisp and stable shot since tripod on a moving safari jeep is not a practical option.
