Location
Big Apple was taken in Havana on the famous boulevard de Obispo.Time
This image was taken in the morning of a cloudy day in the city. I remember getting up at 4:00 am to go out to take pictures at very mild hours of the day looking for the magic of first lights.Lighting
Big Apple is an image that is part of a series entitled 1950´ NYC bitacora de la habana. This series was designed to create a visual parallel between Havana and NYC in the 1950s. To do this, I lean on the visuality and drama of black and white, moving images with exposures of up to 10 minutes. Confusing the reviewer was a lot of fun, when they read the name of the photos and then saw it again it was like they fell in the accounts!Equipment
Back then in 2013-2014 I was working with a canon 5 d Mark II and a canon 16-35 f / 2.8 wide angle lens, a combination that completely changed my way of photography, I have never been able to shoot vertical images again. Since then all my photographic work is horizontal.Inspiration
The inspiration for this photo was accompanied by several factors, the optics that I am using changed my way of seeing photography, the whole world fit in my painting with that wide angle and therefore I was strongly tempted for architecture. On the other hand I was investigating at that time with neutral density ND filters and the idea of having a lot of movement on the streets in broad daylight was fascinating. Hence the idea of finding similarity between NYC and Havana was born and Big Apple or the Big Apple was born, one of my best and best-selling images.Editing
Post-production was an important element to bring the image from color to black and white, but it was not the mainstay of the series. The frames, the exposure time and above all, everything that happened for 10 minutes with the mirror open was the main attraction of each of the photos. They are images that have a life of their own, they are 10 minutes of life condensed in one image. In my camera bag
Right now I use a Leica SL2 with a Leica Super Vario Elmar-SL 16-35mm f / 3.5-4.5 ASPH lens, my faithful companion in the world of real estate photography.Feedback
My advice is that you do not be afraid to rub yourself on the floors in order to take a photo while everyone sees you, the end result is worth it.
