Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a public pool, while a dive school was busy giving SCUBA lessons

Time

The only time I had access to the pool was in the evening, when it was quieter in the pool.

Lighting

I used several Inon 2000 underwater flashes, triggered by light. A weaker flash was connected to the camera, triggering the Inon flashes.

Equipment

I used a friend's camera for this shoot, a Canon G12. The intention was to use an exposure time a lot shorter than the camera's sync time (which is possible in this setup), but the camera secretly was overriding my settings...

Inspiration

Shooting underwater gives you the possibility to shoot "out of this world" photos, I love it! One of the dive instructors who granted me access to the pool is also selling Shishas, I saw this as a nice and creative way of saying 'thank you' by providing him with photos of his Shishas.

Editing

I had to darken the floor of the pool. If you look closely, you can still see a diver on the left in the background when you play with the exposure settings...

In my camera bag

For underwater I normally use basic SLRs in a soft housing with a mounted manual flash in the housing. Yes, it flooded twice. Alternatively I use a Sony RX100II in a decent housing. I connected an LED to the hot-shoe of the Sony inside the housing, which triggers an underwater flash on top of the transparent housing. This flash is on minimum power and triggers the other underwater flashes. Otherwise it's INON 2000 underwater flashes on basic stands. For underwater shoots I always bring a backup camera. Otherwise batteries and model releases.

Feedback

Everything is different under water (radio triggers don't work for example). If your model is close to a single flash you'll get a colour gradient, as red is filtered out quicker the the other colours. Be VERY patient with your model - it's harder for a model than you think! Emma Jeannette did a great job!
