Photography comes naturally to me and it is this passion that drives me everyday to freeze the moments through my lens. I took this picture during my recent visit to Sariska Tiger Reserve at Alwar, Rajasthan in India, which is also a host to many migratory birds from around the world.Time
It was late afternoon when I, along with my family and couple of friends were driving down back from Sariska Fort. While all were busy talking about their plans for the coming new year's eve, i was busy exploring the beauty of the dense forest outdoors. Out of habit, I would never want to miss out on any opportunity that would make a great picture. My DSLR is always ready to get into action. Soon, I noticed lots of birds at the edge of a shallow cliff. Immediately, we stopped and i stepped out with my DSLR loaded with telephoto lens.Having little time on hand, I took as many pictures as possible of these beautiful brown sparrows. It was on 30th December, 2017 at 4.13 pm when i pressed the shutter button to take this picture.Lighting
As i was out in the wild, I chose to travel light and was not carrying any special lights. The idea was to use the natural light in best possible way for all my shots. To my luck, on this day and at this moment the natural light was just perfect. It was nearing evening and the sun was at a 45 degree angle giving out comforting soft light.. This made the birds literally glow from one side. I positioned myself diagonally opposite from the light and the birds in between. I was happy with this set up as i could achieve the desired result. This brown sparrow with a nice soft glow around it's body looks beautiful and soothing to the eyes.Equipment
This was shot on Canon 760D with Tamron 70-300 mm lens, f 5, 1/125 sec. No other equipment was involved.Inspiration
I was out exploring in the wild and ready to capture every moment that nature had to offer. The weather, the light and the sight of these beautiful brown birds created a perfect combination to capture. Under the glow of the evening sun, the birds were happy chirping and pecking on tit-bits from the ground. Guess, they were having their supper. As i was equipped with a telephoto lens I could position myself at a distance and not become an uninvited guest at their party.They were left happy and so was I with my eye in the view finder and finger on the shutter press.Editing
As this is more like a portrait of a bird, for post processing I used lightroom to enhance the colours, increased contrast a little to make the bird stand out from the background, reduced on the shadow to make the details of the bird's feather more visible and reduced little noise to make the glow around the bird's body more soft and soothing.In my camera bag
I never leave home without my Canon 760D. If i am stepping out for a walk or to attend to day to day life errands, I mostly carry a sling pouch that easily fits my Canon 760D body, 50mm 1.8 Canon Prime lens, 18-135mm kit lens, Digitek DFL-200T Pro flash light, a spare battery and a spare 32GB SD Card. If i am stepping out with a purpose to shoot or traveling out of town than I carry my shoulder bag which along with the above gear also fits my Tamron 70-300mm telephoto lens, battery charger, lens cleaning kit, transfer cable, battery charger, shutter release remote, flash diffuser, portable mobile charger, blue tac and Manfrotto tripod. As a passionate photographer, one never knows what moments life will offer next. I ensure I am always ready to capture those moments.Feedback
I believe knowledge is a key differentiator between an average or an amateur photographer and a professional photographer. Photography is a vast and deep subject. I simply say 'Understanding Light'. The more one knows is what makes one a better photographer. I am a self learned photographer. Even today I spend on an average 2 to 3 hours daily studying about photography over the internet and practice new tricks. My favourite is digital-photography-school.com which I am sure many are aware of. If not than add a bookmark now and spend some time daily studying photography. Other than gearing up with all the technical knowledge, give wings to your creative self. Practice daily, try new things, explore new places, visualise your shots before hand, understand your subject, follow the light and above all build immense patience. Life around you is filled with moments, moments that become memorable. Capture them!
