Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on the trail up to Glacier Byron, Anchorage, AK a few days prior to Christmas.

Time

As the sun set behind our backs, I turned around to appreciate the ever changing landscape between 3 and 4 pm as Alaska's winter sun sets are extremely early and ephemeral.

Lighting

I needed this image to convert the cold of winter as well as the heat the sunset inspires by simply casting its iridescent colors on the clouds. Sunset was the utmost opportune time to capture this contrast.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D3400 with a 18-55mm lens as my only equipment. No flash.

Inspiration

I was inspired to capture this image by the fact that Alaska has been my home for the past 7 years, but college has taken me away during some of its most beautiful times and I wanted to start having printed, or displayed, memories to look back on.

Editing

The only post processing I did was bring out the yellows and oranges a bit in the clouds by adjusting the saturation and luminance

In my camera bag

I have never considered myself a photographer. I fear I know too little and have a long road ahead of me as an enthusiast. All I use is my Nikon D3400 and will occasionally switch between my 18-55mm and 75-300mm lenses.

Feedback

Alaska's winter summers are some of the most beautiful I have seen, but to capture them you must start your hike early enough so you can appreciate the ever fleeting moment with your own eyes as well. Also, frostbite is an ever present danger so an early start will give you daylight so you can have a sense of direction in case an unforeseen white out hits you.
