There's a thousand tales in the face of that battered old campaigner - battles won and lost! A great photo and no wonder why it has so many awards. Well done !! :-)

Behind The Lens

Location
This photo of a lion called Scar is from the Maasai Mara national reserve in Kenya.
Time
This was sometime before lunch. We had spent about an hour with an african wild dog (that in itself a very rare and special sighting) when we saw Scar on the other side of the Mara river. Against the odds he actually decided to cross the river, and after he'd settled on the other side he began roaring after his pride – which is when I took this photo.
Lighting
If I remember correctly this day was slight overcast, so not having any strong sunlight in the lion's face made for decent conditions for capturing this kind of portrait.
Equipment
Photo was made with a Nikon D500 and a Nikon 200-400mm.
Inspiration
Capturing a full face portrait of a male lion was on my wishlist for this particular safari, and even though the main goal was to get a shot perfectly straight from the front with the eyes looking into the camera (which I did get) I also really like this photo. It may look like an obvious and simple shot to get, but in my opinion it's a lot harder than it looks.
Editing
For this shot I just had to apply some basic adjustments to the raw file, like contrast, sharpness and such.
In my camera bag
My current safari kit is a Nikon D500 with a 200-400mm lens, a Nikon D750 with a 70-200mm lens and a 35mm Fujifilm X100F camera. I've also got a 15-30mm zoom for wide angle shots, and an iPhone for video or random snapshots.
Feedback
Take lots of photos and use burst fire to increase the chance of capturing that one special frame.
