This is one of my favorite images because it reminds me of the trip my son and I took from Montana to South Dakota then through Wyoming, where this image was taken, and back to Montana. We just white knuckled our way through this storm when I looked in the rearview mirror to take a peek and saw this amazing view.Time
I love traveling in the summer because the days are so long. The light in the evening is just amazing throughout the western United States and we love to take full advantage of every drop of light. This was taken on July 22, 2017 at 7:19pm as we were hustling to our next stop before we ran out of day.Lighting
I wanted to capture the golden hills and prairie in contrast with the dark clouds of the storm and colorful rainbow. We were driving into the sun at this point so the lighting was perfect for creating this beautiful double rainbow right over the road behind us.Equipment
This was shot with my Nikon D7200 f/11, 1/500, ISO 1000 with a Tokina wide angle lens at 14mm.Inspiration
Who doesn't love rainbows? They just make your heart smile and I am certainly a sucker for a double. Especially when coupled with the drama of a dark storm. This composition made it look like you were coming out of the darkness into the light and I hoped that it would inspire others to feel happy.Editing
I am a very amateur passionate enthusiast and post-processing is definitely my friend however on this one I just used a touch of dehaze and balanced out the noise from the high ISO with a touch of luminance correction. In my camera bag
Since I love to have options ... umm ... I need them too ... lol. I have everything except the kitchen sink in my bag. I carry my Nikon body, 50 and 300mm prime lenses, my 20-200mm as well as a couple of Tokina wide angle lenses for landscapes and my latest addition of the new Nikon 200-500mm. I also have a Gitzo tripod that I proudly got for a steal second hand as well as a walking pole and monopod. Now mind you, I do a lot of jumping in and out of the car so not all of this is on my person at one time. I have a smaller bag that I use for hiking, camping, and/or walking about town.Feedback
I think that in order to capture the amazing beauty that we have the opportunity to see every day, you have to get yourself out there. Be curious. Explore, discover and get a little dirty (with kit in tow of course). Experiment with your gear and different compositions and never be afraid to fail because that is how we learn and grow.
