Location
This picture was taken near "Pinhal Novo", a town just outside Lisbon, Portugal. It ias an artificial lake used to provide water to the farms surrounding it. It has an old ciment pear, decaying in a day to day basis. I am self tought in the world of photography, and this photo was one more huge lesson in this area. I tried to use the olive tree to give the photo some framing and the pear to give it some depth.Time
I sometimes go with my cousin to some photosessions. we just take the camera, tripods, and set ourselfs almost without as route. We just decided to checkout that water spot that we saw on the maps and went for it. It's an amazing way to release all the stress from work acummulated during the week. It was around 2AM, with almost 0 degrees celcius. While looking at the photo, try to imagine the sound of all the frogs ecoing through the nigh. It was indeed a really nice time.Lighting
Lighting wasn't easy at all. The spot is quite close to the city, so there's a lot of light noise aroun the place, the main reason for not being able to capture the milky way. Down in the horizont line there's a big highway, which makes it even more difficult to avoid getting that part of the picture burned. I was'nt sure if I would need a double shot, so I took it anyway. One for the sky and other one for the ground, the second one with a longer shutter speed.Equipment
I use a Canon 550d, it's the only digital DSLR camera that I have. I also have some progressive ND filters, but I was too lazy and did not use them. The tripod is a 40€ worth tripod. We were lucky there wasn't much wind.Inspiration
I was actually trying to find a place in this area where we could have a nice view of the milky way and I was actually kind of disaponted since the goal was not being reached. While walking around, we found the peer, and in a glinpse, by the corner of the eye, I said to my cousin, we're not leaving empty handed from here, and started setting up the tripod.Editing
In the end I didn't use the second picture. I just used the first one. I liked the idea of having the olive tree with backlight framing the photo. In the other hand, the second photo, whith a longer shutter speed, had a star trail reflected in the lake. I considered that the combination of both would not be interesting. When pot-processing, I usually only work with contrast and maybe a bit of color correction to reduce the effect of changing the contrast. In this case I went a bit further, the photo itself already had the color difference between the sky and the ground. So I eddited it twice, one for the ground with more temperature, and for the sky with less temperature. Then merged both.In my camera bag
My bag/backpack has: sangyong 14mm, Canon 75-300mm, Canon 18-55mm, 6 ND filters, polaryzer filter, high power lantern, second battery, bugs repelent, bottle of water. And tripod in the hand.Feedback
Have patient and don't take unacessary risks, specially when going to the midle of nowhere alone. Always be ready and receptive to new opportunities or inspirations. You might be search for a specific photo, and end up having an opportunity to catch a completely different environment. Experiment and be prepared. If you are post-processing and are still not sure how you intend your final photo to be, take several shots, double shot, with more or less exposure. you might decide in the end to go in a different direction.
