Location
This photograph was taken on the decking of our house. Sulphur-crested cockatoos and 5 other species of parrots have been regular visitors. Unfortunately, the cockatoos are also destructive and chew up the timber rails and furniture.Time
The shot was taken in the late afternoon. The sun low in the sky backlighting and against the dark and dense foliage.Lighting
Flat lighting doesn't bring out the best in on these bright white birds. Backlighting makes the crest glow and the edge lighting adds sparkle.Equipment
Handheld shot, taken with a 7D Mark11 and a 100-400 IS 11 USM. ISO 500 1/160 F/8Inspiration
I love these birds The lighting just adds to the magic. At this time of day, they tend to relax and fluff their feathers making them even more attractive.Editing
Post processed in Lightroom. Despite the adjustments, the final image is only slightly different to the original. +29 highlights -36 Whites -5 Blacks + 20 Clarity +13 Vibrance No Crop Spot adjustment of +49 Sharpness 37 ClarityIn my camera bag
I am a Wildlife Artist and Photographer I chose the 7D for the extra magnification on the crop sensor. My carry on camera bag for travels weighs 14kg. It contains all my essential Camera gear including laptop, card reader, chargers, hard drives, cables, shoulder stock .... Shooting with a Canon 7D and 7D Mark11, 100-400 1:4.5-5.6 L IS 11 USM. & 24-105 1:4.Feedback
You never know when a photo opportunity may present its self. Despite these birds visiting 3 or 4 times a day, the changing light offers many varied opportunities. Be prepared to take the opportunities when they present themselves.
