The story behind this picture is worth as much a all the other fun and facts I can share about this picture. A few weeks before taking this picture I met this girl at an event at my work. I was just taking some pictures to show to the outside world what we are doing, when my lens caught her reflection. She looked stunning on film! After sharing this with her, I challenged her of modelling for me. She never stood in front of a camera before and was quite nervous to do so. Rather to travel to some exotic spots and background, I felt it would be better to do the shoot in my home. So to make a long story short, this shot was taken, at my house, while she was standing in the door (leading from my living room to my garden.Time
I wish there was an awesome story to tell, about waiting for that special time of day. Watching the sky and weather reports to…. Well, truth is as simple as it could be. This one was shot in mid December around noon. Simply because I had take in account my youngest boys is still taking his midday nap ?.Lighting
Yeah, at this point I can share my “secret”. It wasn’t all chance with this picture. In order to take a picture like this there’s a few things to take in account. 1. Make sure there’s no hard light (f.i. direct sunlight). 2. Try to create as much contrast between your foreground and background as possible. In my situation: Place the model as close to the window (garden door) as possible without putting her into the sunlight. That way, you’ll have a huge soft box (sort of) and your model will pop-out of the background.Equipment
This shot was taken with my favorite camera, the Canon 5D mark III, combined with the Canon 135 mm 2.0 lens. Used nothing more then my sturdy hand :). (and a ISO of 640 and amp of 2.8)Inspiration
When I first met this girl I immediately noticed her eyes. The really popped! So I had to find a great (contrasting) light so really bring them out. But I wanted something more as well. All my thoughts combined let me to open the garden door and let the wind play with her hair. Had to take a few shots to finally capture this shot. I really remember her being nervous for this one. So didn’t know how to look and laugh. So I told her to just look straight at me…… and she did……Editing
Of course I did. If I found a camera (and “personal skills”) which can do this without processing…… I want it!! No just kidding. I only work with Photoshop (C.C.). I know Lightroom is highly celebrated among us, but I started with this and I’m comfortable with it. Processing portraits, in my opinion, is all about highlighting the beauty which is already there. In this case I had to remove (quite a few) blemishes from her skin (she’s a teenager, with the skin problems that come with her age). Remove a few “lost” hairs. Accentuate her eyes. Crop the image a little. Altogether, come to think of it, the post processing on this one was very limited. Ps the difference between the original and final photo is noticeable ?.In my camera bag
After switching a few times over the last couple of years, I finally have a “steady” bag of equipment. Keep in mind I usually take portraits. So here we go. The bag of Bassie: Sigma 35 1.4 (art series), Sigma 85 1.4, Canon 135 2.0, Canon 70-200 IS 4.0 and the Canon 5D mark III body. The canon 70-200 isn’t used very much anymore. And I’m considering to buy the Sigma 50 1.4 art. I love the Sigma lenses. They deliver an outstanding quality and sharpness at an affordable (in comparison to Canon) price.Feedback
Yeah I do. I more or less already shared my secret. But try to find a large window. The bigger the better. Position your model just outside the hard (sun)light rays and you’ll have a great basis to deliver a stunning shot. If you want it to more exciting place some (extra) lights (or lighter points) in the background. That way you can create depth into your picture. Have fun trying!!! And feel free to ask for any pointers….
