Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken during a 2 week hiking trip through the Rhodopi Mountains in Bulgaria a few years ago.

Time

It must have been the early afternoon - we would usually travel the greatest distance possible until noon, which tired everybody out quite a bit, and would lie down for a longer break after lunch like so :D

Lighting

The lighting is all natural and in the moment - it was not a photographer's trip, there was no room or electricity on the road for special lighting and I hadn't brought much equipment with me to begin with.

Equipment

This shot was actually taken on a Samsung Galaxy A5 in far from perfect lighting and weather conditions deep in the woods so naturally it is a bit grainy but it provided enough natural contrast and allowed me to get that wonderful low-angle shot, which would have been quite difficult with a bigger camera.

Inspiration

This dog was one of two sister pups we found wandering by an old road deep in the woods of Rhodopi mountain. They were completely alone - no trace of a mother, other siblings or people who had lost them or left them there. It seemed they were completely abandoned. And they were hungry. And thursty. So our group stopped to help them and before we knew it, we were bonding with the puppies and they took to us. As we were resting inbetween hikes one of the puppies fell asleep near me and I couldn't resist taking that photo of her. Both of pups left that place with us on day 3 and followed us all the way back home to day 14. We all loved them instantly and they became the mascots of the group. By the end of the trip, two seperate families adopted each of the puppies and took them home!!

Editing

As far as I can recall this is a case of minimal to no editing - with lower quality shots I've found that's always the best way to go. Overediting a photo like this will only make its imperfections stand out that much more.

In my camera bag

Apart from the Canon 700D and the standard issue 18-55mm lens, I always bring with me the 10-18mm and 50mm lenses and a few handmade filters, along with a charger and two extra battery packs. If possible I take my tripod with me as well.

Feedback

Advice I'm trying to follow myself - go on more adventures and capture moments that move you! This hiking trip, the puppies, their happy ending and this photo is something I could have never planned for or anticipated - it was just pure dumb luck and I took the shot. Even though this is far from my best picture, I think that's where the best of photography comes from - the unexpected, the surprise, the improvisation.
