Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken near Bishop, California. Facing the Inyo National Forest, Mt Emerson and Bear Creek Spire.

Time

I took this photo while on a fishing trip with some friends. We were heading back to camp in the afternoon and I pulled off to the side of the road to take this shot. With the snow capped mountains and no other vehicles on the road. It was one of the most peaceful places I've been.

Lighting

Pure natural light. The sun was in the right spot and timing was perfect.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D7200. 35mm Nikkor lens with a UV filter. No other equipment was used. I set my camera on the ground in the middle of the road and set a 5 second timer.

Inspiration

It just hit me in the moment. Was heading back to camp for lunch and I came around the corner and the mountain was just asking for me to stop. It reminded me of the shots in the movies. I took 1 photo and then just stood there taking in the scenery.

Editing

Nothing special. I only took one photo and wasn't too concerned with over thinking my settings. I barely touched the white balance and contrast in post process. I wanted to leave it as raw as possible. This was my first opportunity to take a photo like this, so I just kind of winged it. I think next time I would take multiple shots and layer them. Focusing on different subjects to really make it pop.

In my camera bag

My Nikon D7200. I have a 80-300 Sigma macro lens, 35mm Nikkor, Tokina 100mm ATX macro. Macro slide, Vanguard tripod and a Pluto trigger. That's about all the equipment I have.

Feedback

The best advice I follow, is to keep your eyes open at all times. You never know what you'll come across. This was one of my first landscape shots, so to be honest I don't have much advice. Just experiment and don't be afraid to try new things.
