This Photo was taken in my home studio In Texas in the front room of my home.Time
I took this photo around 1:00 in the afternoon. The light in my studio is beautiful around this time.Lighting
I wanted this photo to look more like a fine art piece. I used window light. The girls were facing 3 windows. I had a reflector camera right and I had a constant light camera left pointed to the back of the wall for bounce.Equipment
I used my canon 5d mark 3, a reflector, my 50mm 1.4 canon lens and an inexpensive constant light.Inspiration
I am obsessed with traditional portraits. I have been wanting to get two sisters similar ages into my home studio. I wanted a very romantic feel and was hoping to get a very moody but sweet expression from the girls.Editing
Yes I did. This was shot on a black backdrop. I added a brown yellowish texture to it to give it a more fine art feel. I played with the white balance, contrast and clarity. I pulled this photo into photoshop to clean up blemishes and add the texture. I also dodged and burned their skin slightly and I finished it off with alien skin at a lower opacity. In my camera bag
My canon 5d mark3, 50 1.4, 85. 1.8 and my 28 1.8 Lens. I also carry a canon flash with a Gary Fong diffuser.Feedback
Have an idea in your head. Plan your shoot out to the smallest detail but know with children the first 15 minutes you will get your best work because after they are pretty much over it. Play with your lighting. If something isn't working, correct it quickly and keep shooting. With portraits where a child needs to sit still you only have a small window of opportunity. Your camera needs to be on continuous shooting. Know how to swap heads in photoshop. I didn't do that in this photo but it has come in handy with other shoots. Really learn post processing. It can take a image from good to just wow!
