Location
This photo was taken at a country show at Thoresby Park in Nottinghamshire.Time
It was taken late in the afternoon around 4pm on a beautiful sunny afternoonLighting
The photo was taken inside a marquee at the show. It was a beautifully sunny afternoon and the sun was coming through the top of the white marquee as well as through the marquee opening. So although it was natural sunlight the marquee roof between the sun and the owl greatly enhanced the lighting making it much more muted and mellowEquipment
It was taken using my Canon EOS1200D with my canon zoom lens 75-300 mm and that was all. It had an aperture of f/5, an aperture of 1/640, an ISO of 3200 and a focal length of 180/1Inspiration
My favourite genre for photography is birds and animals, but I especially love birds of prey. There was a falconry establishment with a marquee full of different birds of prey and owls at the country show and I went both days and spent it taking photos of various different birds and animals. This photo is of a Spectacled Owl and I had never seen one before so I wanted to get a few good shots of it as it is not normally a bird you see where I live, even at country shows, so it was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I have never seen one since and am still going to country shows. So if you have see something that you really wan to take a picture of and the opportunity and the time is there, then take it as it may be the only chance you getEditing
I altered it from colour to black and white using the green filter pre-set on Photoshop Lightroom and then I altered the clarity to enhance it. After that I put it on to Picasa 3 where I sharpened it and then used the focal zoom tool in order to distort the edges as I wanted to draw the viewers eye into the middle of the image where the owls eyes are and to make it more dramatic and I am very pleased with the effect I achieved with itIn my camera bag
I have my Canon EOS1200D camera, a canon zoom lens 75-300mm and my macro lens 18-55mm. I also have macro lens convertors lens wipes, spare batteries (they are rechargeable and are always fully charged ready for use), a lens hood, and an air dust blower. I use a 64GB memory card which is never taken out of the camera.Feedback
One thing I have learned about photographing animals and birds is that it takes patience, time and perseverence. Very rarely will they accommodate you by giving you the shot you want straight away. "The Eyes Have It" took me 2 whole days at Thoresby Country Show to obtain the initial shot that became the black and white image that is on Viewbug. And, when the shot comes, you have to be quick on the shutter because you can have only seconds to take it before the subject moves and the shot may never present itself to you again for a matter of months if at all. Experiment with different effects. This photo was an experiment to see what it would look like and I the dramatic effect that it gave me. It was the effect I wanted for the picture and I wasn't sure how I was going to get it so I started experimenting with different effects until I found one that worked. Know how you want your image to look like, what effect/feeling do you want it to convey and then don't stop until you achieve it. Get the final image to how you want it to be. If you look at it and you are not 100% happy with it start all over again and only stop when you you are completely happy with it, with the composition, the colour, everything. I have found another effect that I want to try and achieve and so am currently working on trying to achieve it but I think it will take a while as it is introducing me to new things that I have never done before so it is a lot of learning and a lot of trial and error but the results will be worth the effort so I intend to persevere with it.
