Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in the province of Alytus, in one of the many lakes in the south of Lithuania.

Time

This photo was taken just after the sunrise.

Lighting

The place where the sun light was coming from was not the one i would prefer but i had a clear idea of the composition with the jetty in the middle, so i tried to take to my advantage the fact of sun being the very right part of the frame, letting me capture a nice balance between "warm" and "cold"

Equipment

Canon 6D, Canon 16-35mm f4 IS L, GND 0.9 filter

Inspiration

I love to capture all these jetties, docks, piers and some other structures by the water. Lithuania is a perfect place for this kind of photography. In this shot i tried to get the most close to perfect reflection while keeping some symmetry in the frame, and a good balance between warm and cold tones.

Editing

I usually make some fast adjustments in Lightroom and then i take the image to Photoshop to get the final image. And that's what i also did with this image.

In my camera bag

Canon 6D, Canon 16-35mm f4 IS L, Canon 70-200mm f4 IS L, Samyang 14mm f2.8, remote shutter, tripod, filter holder with a couple filters, torch ....

Feedback

I recommend to spend some time (even if you think you don't need) to place the tripod in the right place. Though it can be corrected in post-proccessing, it is nice to get the lines as you want directly in the camera. Few centimeters can make the difference in order to get the lines as you want. Apart from that, long exposure can always help to smooth the water, though in this case there was no wind at all and the water looked like a mirror.
