Behind The Lens

Location

This was shot in studio conditions, a single strobe off to the models right provided the light source.

Time

It was an evening shoot. The models appearance inspired a number of interesting poses that evening and this one was taken to capitalise upon his excellent skill at portraying an emotion without saying a word - the mark of a great model.

Lighting

A single Bowens 400w strobe through a large 150cm octobox provided the light source. I enjoy the simplicity of a single light and it rarely fails to produce good results.

Equipment

This was shot on my Nikon D810 at 1/160 F10 at ISO 64 using a Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VRII and a Feisol Tripod. Light triggered by a pocketwizard.

Inspiration

The model 'Pip' is a delight to work with - he produces images from every angle and when he put on his sorrowful face I could see the potential for an image immediately.

Editing

Apart from the conversion to black and white I increased the contrast, raised the shadows a little and lowered the highlights. That's pretty much all I did - it really was quite a simple image to make.

In my camera bag

I shoot Nikon and all my lenses are Nikon too although I have recently added a fantastic 135mm f2 Zeiss lens to the bag and also the excellent new Tamron 35mm f1.8.

Feedback

Keep it simple and use a tripod. Using a tripod will slow you down and give you more time to think about your composition. Oh, and your images will be sharper too!
