Behind The Lens

Location

I literally took this picture in my back yard! I am so fortunate to live in an area where there is an abundance of wildlife. My wife and I own a ranch in the high desert of Eastern Oregon where the only thing you need to do is walk out your front door.

Time

This picture was taken just as the sun was setting. We had a recent storm blow through and this made the colors just "pop".

Lighting

The golden hour seems to be when I get my best shots.

Equipment

This photo was taken using my Canon 70 with a EF 400mm lens. My tripod was a nearby fence post!

Inspiration

Everthing just "clicked"...the coyote was on the hunt and wasn't even phased by my presence...and the light was PERFECT!

Editing

The only post-processing I do is cropping, otherwise, you see what I see.

In my camera bag

My camera bag always contains my Canon 70 Mark II with an EF 400mm lens, my Canon 100-400 zoom lens, my Canon EFS 18-200mm lens, two spare batteries, an extra memory card, a cleaning cloth, tripod, binoculars, a bottle of Gatorade and a Cliff bar.

Feedback

My advice to anyone trying to photograph wildlife is PATIENCE...with yourself and your subject. You may have to sit all day to capture the right moment. And most importantly, be patient with yourself. Your "eye" will get better the more you practice and sites like ViewBug offer feedback and encouragement from other photographers.
