Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my home studio in Linz, Austria.

Time

For all my lightpainting images, I have a complete black studio, so I can also shoot long-exposure on daytime - like this I´m not restricted to time.

Lighting

Before you try this for yourself, make sure your gestures are as accurate as possible, as this is taken in a single exposure. The spinning of the lightsource is a bit like Tai-Chi, the more often you twist your hand during the movement the more deepness comes into the picture.

Equipment

I shot this image with a Canon 7D, 18-55mm lens, fixed on tripod and triggered by RC. The trails were created with an acrylic circle blade attached to a very bright torch. The circle was color-geled on its outside with tiny foil-snippets in yellow and green.

Inspiration

My lightpainting inspirations are usually based on experiences I made earlier and each session is bringing input and inspiration for the next shooting.

Editing

No this is shot as you see it now.

In my camera bag

I recently switched to a full format system, now this is based on a Canon 5D Mark IV, a 50mm Canon lens, a Sigma 28-200mm and a Tokina 19-35mm, a Manfrotto tripod, Metz flash, various torches, blades and other lightpainting tools which I usually select depending on the project.

Feedback

Keep it simple and try to move smooth like a Ninja. If you want to be invisible, wear black and chose a dark room. The more you return to steps of your motion, the more your light trails will burn out by overlapping. Feel free to check out some tutorials on my website: lightwriting.de Involve some friends for the action, it´s always more fun doing stuff like this together!
