Behind The Lens

Location

I captured this photo from the hill of Arakurayama Sengen park in a small town Fujiyoshida, Japan.

Time

That was an absolute luck to capture the clear view of Fujisan during the rainy week in April. I woke up around 04:00 am. The window of the hotel room I stayed in was facing mount Fuji (Fujisan). I carefully opened the curtains hoping to see a clear and fresh morning. At around 05:30 am being full of excitement I started preparing my equipment waiting for the moment. Fujisan was spectacular that morning.

Lighting

That was a sunrise and the natural light was just perfect. The sun was right behind me lighting up Fujisan through clouds and fog.

Equipment

I rushed and completely forgot about my tripod. To capture that beautiful moment I used the wooden barrier of the observation deck to stabilize my Nikon D810 and Nikkor 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5g ed vr lens.

Inspiration

The scenery itself looked inspiring. And to describe in details I would like to highlight the haiku I recently wrote to this photo. "the wind of freedom takes me to the top again away from sorrows..." Being immersed in the routine day by day we tend to become unfortunate prisoners of different circumstances that dictate our lives. In such moments it is crucial to detach from these circumstances and look at our lives from a different perspective to feel free and move on. The photo has three key elements reflecting each haiku line. The bottom of the photo with its monotonous scenery of suburbian life symbolizes my feelings I experience due to certain circumstances, mentioned in the 3rd haiku line 'away from sorrows'. The top of the photo with absolutely gorgeous clear view of Fujisan adds more contrast to the 2nd haiku line symbolizing the feelings of freedom and peace I experience looking at my life from a different perspective. The third key element of the photo is the layer of fog that enhances the 1st haiku line and symbolizes the transformation of my feelings.

Editing

I played a tiny bit with the clarity and contrast as the morning was really foggy.

In my camera bag

I always carry my Nikon D810, couple of lenses, depending on the work I am going to have. Having two spare batteries is a must for me as I love to take my time while working. I always carry remote control, lots of memory cards and my little beast SEKONIC L-858D-U Speedmaster Light Meter.

Feedback

Working with scenery to me personally is about commitment. If you really want to be satisfied with your results as a photographer you simply must be ready to invest lots of time to capture the right moment. To capture the right moment with the right lighting you must come to your location an hour before and scout the area for your unique angle.
