Location

It was late afternoon and we were actually rather discouraged by the lack of wildlife, especially lions. This made us more likely to stop and spend time with Uganda Kob, which we did, and of course I'm quite happy with the results.Lighting
I'm not sure I would call it the golden hour, but the lighting was quite nice--a low, filtered sun with some interesting clouds beginning to form.Equipment
We were shooting out the top of our safari vehicle. No tripod or bean bag, just steadying my Canon 6D by hand. I had a Canon 100-400mm. No extender.Inspiration
An adult with a youngster standing by its side is quite an irresistible shot. I was pleased to see the symmetry and that both animals were looking in my direction with eyes open--quite serendipitous!Editing
I cropped it to my liking and did some basic LR editing such as lowering highlights and increasing shadows. In my camera bag
Having traveled with a group of world class photographers to Uganda, I am in the process of upgrading. What I will have in my bag for my next safari is two camera bodies: a Canon 6D with a 24-105mm and the Canon 6D Mark II with the new Canon 100-400mm and a 1.4xIII extender. Best not to change lenses in the field!Feedback
Go some place exotic and wild where you eat, sleep, talk and live photography for days or weeks. Get in the Zone and stay there as long as you can. And go with people who are better than you. Ask lots of questions and learn!!!
