Why do buildings that have been abandoned decay so quickly when some people live in houses that are centuries old?
"When a building is abandoned, it is no longer sealed in a way to keep environmental elements out. Even if the building is well sealed, simply having the temperature drop to levels that would normally be controlled by human comfort standards, will create an environment that will be more likely to promote organic growth, which leads to mold and decay.
Humans will naturally protect their home without even realizing it. Simply shutting a window when it's too cold or turning on an exhaust fan when it becomes too humid not only helps with our own comfort, but actually helps maintain the integrity of the delicate interior construction materials that would otherwise be exposed to harmful.
Also, maintenance. Cutting the lawn, protecting exposed building elements with paint, replacing sealant and replacing construction materials and waterproofing membranes as they come to the end of their lifespan (every construction material has an expiry date no matter how well maintained) will prolong the life of the building significantly."
