Behind The Lens

Location

The photograph was taken at Grassy Waters Everglades Preserve in West Palm Beach, Florida. This expansive wetlands ecosystem features native wildlife, pristine landscapes and hiking. It backs up to the yard behind a neighborhood and rarely fails to present a beautiful show.

Time

The photograph was taken on my nightly walks after work with my dog. I would rush home and we would walk on the levee behind the neighborhood to unwind from the day. The birds feed at this time and one dropped a twig in the river to cause the ripples.

Lighting

I walked the same path nearly every night, but the lighting would change as the seasons did. Here, I remember being excited because it was a bit stormy and the clouds were trapping the sunset colors in the atmosphere.

Equipment

I used an i-phone to take this photograph.

Inspiration

Wetlands are among the most beautiful, underestimated, and threatened places on Earth. I grew up in Florida, but fell in love with the marsh while studying environmental law in Louisiana. I find peace walking in this space and wanted others to be inspired to visit wetlands near them and experience this joy.

Editing

I use Lightroom to edit my photographs.

In my camera bag

I always make sure to carry my i-phone. I'm in the process of upgrading, but even after that happens, I do not think anything will replace the convenience of having a phone close by that I can quickly capture the beauty I see right in front of me.

Feedback

My best advice is to go back to the same place again and again. Take advantage of the fact that the scenery does the heavy lifting for you when you are a landscape photographer. This same location has been the scene of at least thirty percent of my best photographs. This landscape is beautiful and the conditions act to completely transform it from season to season and from night to day.
