Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in my bedroom in the Netherlands, Almere. This is the very first portrait photo I ever made.

Time

This photo was taken on November 30, 2017, at 12:30 PM. I closed my curtain so it was dark in my room. I grabbed my desk lamps and put them down so that there was a shadow on the left half of my face. I set the camera on a tripod and timer function. Because I had never taken a self-portrait photo before, I had to recreate the photo quite often.

Lighting

I wanted to create a shadow so I made it completely dark in my room. The only light I had on were 2 desk lamps.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 550D, with an 18-135mm f/3.5 lens. I used a tripod.

Inspiration

I was curious how I could take a portrait photo. so I went looking for portraits on the internet. There I found a portrait with shadow on one side. I wanted to be able to do this too. I thought I'm just going to try it. This was the end result after quite a lot of pictures.

Editing

The only thing that I have changed is to convert the photo to black and white and to increase the contrast.

In my camera bag

Normally I only have the Canon 550D with the lens 18-135mm f/3.5 and a 100mm f/2.8 macro lens in my bag and of course an extra battery.

Feedback

Make sure that if you want to create shade, the lamps will set up well. It really does not matter if you have professional lamps or not. All you need to do is have trust in your self that you will succeed. And therefore do not give up if after 10 photos it didn't work out.
