Jackie & Jilly at Night With Washing-2_Sig

Nocturnal and domesticated Jackie & Jilly the rather shy residents of Jill Windmill hang out their washing to dry at night.

If only this Photoshop composite were real.

Behind The Lens

Location
I took the background image at Jill Windmill in Clayton, West Sussex, UK
Time
The background image was taken at exactly 19:14 & 36 seconds on November 9, 2017.
Lighting
The background image was a 30-second exposure to get the lovely blur in the clouds & pick up as much ambient light as was practical. To make the white windmill stand out from what turned into a bright orange sky was illuminated with a Pixapro Pika200 (same as a Godox AD200) with barn doors & a honeycomb grid & a blue gel filter to make it pop out from the background. The flash was fired as a 1st curtain flash in iTTL mode. The long exposure then helped to soften the edge of the relative hard-edged areas illuminated by this very directional flash.
Equipment
My camera was my trusty Nikon D800, the lens was an Irix 15mm F2.4 Firefly Wide Angle Lens. Lighting as already mentioned was courtesy of Pixapro Pika200 with barn doors & a honeycomb grid & a blue gel filter. The Pika200 was triggered with a Pixapro ST-1V Pro trigger. Both my camera & the Pika200 were supported on carbon fibre tripods fitted with ball heads.
Inspiration
I had arranged to take photographs of this windmill with the charity "The Jack & Jill Windmills Society" sometime before and this was one of the evenings that one of the charity's trustees was available to be on site for this private shoot. While I was there I was thinking of what I could do in post editing that would play with the names Jack & Jill other than the obvious children's' nursery rhyme connection. When I found the giraffes buried in an Adobe clipart collection I decided that they would work really well as Jackie & Jilly, rather than Jack & Jill.
Editing
Yes, there was lots of post-processing. The background image was edited in Photoshop cc & Silver FX Pro for the black & white conversion. The giraffes were supposed to be already cut out from the background & masked in the PSD file. The masking was not very good, so I set about remaking the mask for the giraffes & the other layers that made up the washing line, washing & rope tails. I also did a lot of dodging & burning to turn this bright sunlit image of two giraffes into a hopefully believable nocturnal one. I also dropped in a few subtle shadows on both images and cloned in some grass & some hedging to fill in a couple of obvious gaps & to help blend in the giraffes' feet.
In my camera bag
In my bag, these days is usually the aforementioned, Nikon D800 & a D800E. Lens wise there is usually, a Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8, Nikon 70-200mm f/4, Nikon 300mm f/4, Nikon 50mm f/1.4, Sigma 105mm f/2.8 Macro, Nikon 16-35mm f/4 & an Irix 15mm F2.4 Firefly. Lighting travels in separate bags. On this occasion, I had two Pixapro Pika200s, plus barn doors, honeycomb grids & coloured gel filters for both lights & a couple of Pixapro ST-1V Pro trigger. I also have other portable lights & multiple speedlights & triggers which weren't with me for this photo shoot.
Feedback
My best advice for those wishing to create something similar is quite simple. You need lots of imagination when composing a shot for more than one possible edit. The ability to think in black & white and how different B&W conversion processes & filters will alter shades. Also, be patient when masking. If it's not right, do it again & again until it is right. But mostly pick a subject & final image that you imagine will be fun.
