Behind The Lens

Location

This was photo was taken near Jackson Hole, Wyoming. I am a hobbyist photographer who was immediately drawn to nature and outdoor photography from the moment I picked up a camera a few years go.

Time

This was shot in the afternoon sun in May. My group was coming down from hiking the surrounding areas. I was immediately drawn to this flower. Despite photographing for a few years, I still think of myself as very new and I am always learning. I was very happy I was able to have proper exposure and full focus on the flower.

Lighting

I took this photo a few years ago. It was in the middle of the day, and the light was harsh, but this flower was in the shade.

Equipment

I handheld my Nikond3400 with the kit 18-55mm lens. This was shot at f8,1/80th, ISO100 40mm

Inspiration

I am drawn to nature. Having spent the day in the mountains where I took a bunch of disappointing shots, I came down into the valley and saw this beautiful flower standing all alone. It was my favorite shot of the day.

Editing

A few minor adjustments in Photoshop for exposure is all.

In my camera bag

I have upgraded my kit since I took this photo. I am currently shooting with Nikon d7500. The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 18-300mm is my walk-around lens. I also carry a Tokina SD 11-20 wide-angle, a Sigma 17-70mm, and the Nikkor 40mm AF-S Micro (macro). I have a Bonfoto tripod with a ball head mount. And use a Pixel Pro remote trigger. I also carry CPL and ND filters.

Feedback

Soft light is everything to me with flowers. Check the time of day, time of year. Overcast days are best, as the clouds are natural diffuser. Don't be afraid get to down low on the ground and look for unique angles and compositions
