Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Nusa Penida, a small & wild island near Bali, where I had never done any photoshoots before.

Time

I use to do shoot at early morning, as I like its warm lights, and this picture was taken in the middle of the photoshoot, at approx. 9 am if I remember it well.

Lighting

I've always preferred natural light rather because of its warm tones, and for this picture I just took advantage of a cloudy morning to enhance the surroundings monochrome...

Equipment

For this shoot I just used a Canon 5D MkIII with a 70-200 mm L lens and a large reflector.

Inspiration

When I saw this sand hole surrounded by dark lava stones, I immediately realized the potential for a great monochrome photograph. I thus liked the idea of shooting my model lying down in between those rocks and stones, as if on another planet.

Editing

Here the post processing was quite simple. I just wanted to enhance tones and contrasts of this monochrome photo.

In my camera bag

I use to bring in my bag 2 cameras, 2 lenses, filters and reflectors. I don't really like bringing too much (or too heavy) equipment.

Feedback

My advice for others trying to capture a similar image is to focus on framing and on the model's pose. Light measuring must also be on the sand (or the sky), so that you can modulates tones at post-processing.
