Kayakers enjoying an evening paddle. I like that the person in the yellow kayak is in focus, but the other two are not.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken off Jack's Beach, Bittern, on Westernport Bay.

Time

It was about mid-afternoon, and I had gone for a walk with friends. I usually take a camera with me just in case.

Lighting

The lighting is natural. Sunset an hour away, and a bit overcast, giving a sort of glow to everything around.

Equipment

My camera of choice is the Canon EOS 6 D. Usually with a Tamron 24-75 f2.8 lens, though this picture may have been taken with the Sigma 75-200 zoom lens.

Inspiration

I love the way the angle of the sun under the clouds made everything look like it had an inner glow. When these paddlers happened by and "shone" I thought I would see if this translated in a picture. I'm glad that it looks like it did.

Editing

No, I used to have a Lightroom program but it crashed my computer, and I don't do enough picture taking to make it worth my while to invest in a subscription. So my photos are uploaded as I have them saved on my chip.

In my camera bag

When I take my "bag" I have my Canon EOS 6 D with the Tamron 24-75 f2.8 lens, a Canon 16-35 f4.0 lens, a Sigma 70-200 f2.8 zoom lens, and when I go into the bush I also take my Sigma 150-500 f5.0 lens to try and catch some birds. I also have a Panasonic Lumix point and shoot camera for when I go SCUBA diving.

Feedback

I am photography hack. I take my camera along when I go for a walk and take pictures of things that look interesting. No planning, no thinking about what I would look for. But I do take care to get my settings right. I try not to take photos in Auto mode. This way I end up with lots of pictures that are under lit or over exposed. And lots of trees for some reason. So when a picture turns out looking good it makes me very happy.
