Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo while traveling from Atlanta, Ga to as far as the roads could take me north...Deadhorse, Alaska. To be more exact, this was in the Yukon Territory on the Alcan Highway.

Time

What time of day was his taken....well that’s an even more interesting question than intended...that far north this time of year it’s pretty much daylight most of the time. This was in a dusk’ish hour. It’s weird the lighting up there, “golden hour” fades into this weird “grey hour” and stays that way for a long time. It makes for a very interesting photography experience.

Lighting

The lighting here...well sometimes, especially in wildlife photography you take what you can get. This is a natural light photo that admittedly was underexposed and post saved it. RAW Is your friend.

Equipment

This was a very unexpected shot. I hopped out of the car and snuck just a few steps from an open door to compose the shot (terrified and nervously) I shot this frame with my Fuji X100T with the original lens...so yeah...my feet were the zoom and in this case, well I want going to dare get any closer.

Inspiration

Sometimes in photography it’s not inspiration as much as it is creating the chance for this kind of photo to happen.

Editing

Ohhhhh yes, this was nearly unusable before a little post work. Really boosting as much light as possible was needed to get this readable. Being so underexposed I took the liberty of making it appear like film...almost as a way to mask the underexposed look. If when you look at this photo you think...it’s just not right...that’s because it’s not...and that’s ok. I’ll always remember this moment and how exhilarating the experience was. Maybe the look helps you feel the frantic nature of the situation, no time for perfection, just the moment.

In my camera bag

Typically I carry. Backpack with a Fuji X100T, and XT-2 with the kit lens and a 16mm prime, batteries, tripod, hard drive, mackbook and a few filters and a mechanical shutter release.

Feedback

My advice is to get out there, take a trip, create the space for amazing shots to happen. Sometimes it’s a bust, even more times it’s less than ideal situations, and occasionally it produces really good photos. Most importantly you created the opportunity for something to cross in front of your eyes and consider it as a photo, that grows you as a photographer. ...capturing the moment and feel is up to you.
