Behind The Lens

Location

This tiny frog is endemic of the Monte Verde area, in beautiful Costa Rica.

Time

The 7 colour-frog is supposed to be a nocturnal animal (as you can guess from the size of its round eyes, compared with the rest of the body). However, some noise - maybe a predator - awakened it in mid-afternoon, giving us all a chance to admire this splendour of nature in full light.

Lighting

Most pictures of this amphibian are taken at night, often with the use of a flashlight, but that spoils its natural colours, besides being traumatic for its highly sensitive eyes, so red because of intense blood irroration. Having the chance of seeing one of these animals during daylight is by all means a great luck! (and, yes, beyond the photographer's ability ...)

Equipment

I used a Panasonic DMC-FZ1000. Aperture: 28/10. ISO: 125. Shutter Speed: 10/1600. Focal Length: 912/100. The shoot had to be free-handed, since the scared little beast would not have let me time for setting up my tripod.

Inspiration

This is the kind of pictures in which action comes before thought. Had I looked for the right background, the right light angle and such, the powerful hind legs would have swiftly moved my subjects from my lens. Animal instinct is what drove both the frog and the photographer.

Editing

As a general rule, I don't like post-processing. However, I hope I will be forgiven for (very slightly indeed) having saturated the already bright colours.

In my camera bag

Nature exploration and heavy camera equipment tend to exclude each other. Travelling light is the only way to see the shows that nature keeps offering us.

Feedback

Our wonderful planet has a plethora of stunning surprises for us to discover, each one different as diverse are the areas of the seven continents. Finding them is a mission for many of us, including myself, and I think my nickname says it all. Regards, TravelAllWorld
