Behind The Lens

Location

the photo was taken on Sanur beach in Bali. As the day goes on it just gets better.

Time

Due to the time difference i was up and about at silly o'clock and me being me took myself off to check ouit the new surroundings. this pic was taken on my return at 06:10 in the morning. The sun rises and sunsets in Bali are second to none.

Lighting

As the sun rises in Bali, the whole island explodes with such vivid colours you would think you were looking at your over saturated photos we all produced when we were starting off in the world of photo editing.

Equipment

to take this pic I used a Nikon d800e camera with an old 28-80mm Nikkor lens mounted on a really cheap unbranded lightweight tripod. On the lens i used a nd1000 filter and took a 30 second exposure.

Inspiration

What inspired me to take this picture was the the lines in the sand reaching out into the sea. the tide was coming in and you could watch the land receed leaving the strong lines in the sand. Also the reflections in the water of the person praying had a big part to play in the set up for the pic.

Editing

post processing was done in Paintshop pro where i darkened the shadows of the build-out in the water and raised the midtones to bring more of the coloursin the sand.

In my camera bag

I normally shoot wildlife as my first interest in photography and as such i nomally have a tamron 150-600mm bolted to my camera. in the bag i would carry a "nifty 50" (who doesn't) a sigma 18-35mm and my old trusty nikkor 28-80. along with that i carry various ND filters for the smaller lenses.

Feedback

OK so usually we are our own worse critics, and for me I can pic a few wholes in my composition here. I tried to position my view to bring the horizon to the base of the build out but in doing so I would have lost the reflection of the temple roof or cut out too much of the sand. I was unable to go any lower on the tripod as it was just a travel tripod and didnt give me the flexability of my normal one. look for leading lines to pull you into the picture. Make sure your horizon is straight and look for something interesting to hold the attention of the viewer.
