Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the shore of Crummock Water in the Lake District, England.

Time

This image was captured at the end of a long day hiking around the various lakes in this area. It was late afternoon in the Winter, with the sun setting among stormy clouds.

Lighting

The storm clouds that had begun to part late in the day provided a moody setting to the image, with an orange hue being provided by the setting sun. Thankfully the wind also dropped providing almost a mirror reflection in lake, providing extra mood to the scene.

Equipment

This photo was taken before I had the opportunity to own a DSLR and was captured on my Canon Powershot, compact camera. The image was taken hand held.

Inspiration

I love walking in the Lake District and admiring it's natural beauty. It is a place I really enjoy going to photograph and enjoy the out doors. Thankfully both of these go hand in hand and occasionally the various elements come together to make a good composition.

Editing

Yes, I adjusted the levels and contrast in photoshop as well as some minor colour adjustments.

In my camera bag

I now pack my Canon 600D, 18-55mm kit lens, sigma 105mm and canon 55-250mm telephoto lens. If i'm going out in search of wildlife, i'll also pack the Tamron 150-600mm. This however adds some significant extra weight! I also have polarising filters, ND filters, tripod and shutter release control.

Feedback

It doesn't matter what the weather is, providing your kit is protected, take it with you! You never know when an opportunity will arise. I hope this image also shows that you don't always need the best kit to produce a result. Yes there are limitations, but in general with good composition and technique impressive results can be achieved with the most basic of kit.
