i traveled up to the Cumberland Mountains from, where i live in the Smokies, to see the Elk up at Hatfield Knob. as soon as i got there at sunrise, i knew the shot that i wanted but, didn't think i'd get it. let me stress that... it was just a picture in my mind which i was certain would never happen. the elk never got to the top of that hill the entire day. when i was leaving in the dark and hiking out by flashlight, i was startled by this huge bull laying on the ground at the beginning of the trail. there was still that orange glow at the horizon after the sun had set. i spoke to him and said.."buddy, i can't spend the night on this mountain..i've gotta walk by you." he stood up when he heard my voice and, lo and behold, he walked to the top of that hill and stood completely still for me. yep, that happened. i swear i don't deserve the things i get to see but, boy am i ever grateful for it all.
