Location
Mabry Mill is along the Blue Ridge Parkway in Floyd County, Virginia.Time
It's not unusual to see crowds visiting this historic mill. Getting there off-season in a cloudy day helped me to enjoy the place all by myself (well, almost: my wife and my camera were with me, as well!)Lighting
The clouds are unjustly considered as enemies to the photographer. Actually, when there is no direct sunshine, the light is quite evenly spread throughout the picture, equally emphasizing all the details in the composition.Equipment
A small tripod, though not strictly necessary, was useful. Skylight filter. Aperture 50/10 ISO 50 Shutter 10/387 Focal Length 240/10Inspiration
I have always been fascinated by all things past. On top of that, the stillness of the air and the absence of visitors made up for a mystical atmosphere which I couldn't allow to get lost.Editing
The shot is slightly post-processed to make it similar to a painting. Yes, eventually I had it printed on canvas and the effect is simply amazing! Few people, after seeing it in my living room, realize it is a photograph. In my camera bag
Camera, skylight/polarizing filter, light tripod. That's all I really need.Feedback
Go where/when others do not dare to go. That doesn't apply just to Mabry Mill. That's an all-time rule, if you don't want your photo to be spoiled by crowds.
