Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on the sidewalk in a residential neighborhood.

Time

This image was taken at dusk, just after the street lights came on.

Lighting

The street light in this image was was my main source of light.

Equipment

This was a handheld shot with a Nikon D600 and 85 1.8 lens @ F2

Inspiration

I wanted a photo of my son in his Halloween costume. My son had just gotten out of the car and was ready to start an evening of trick or treating. He was standing on the sidewalk just in front of the street light. I called his name to look my way, and was able to capture this image just as he was raising his hand while he was talking to me. A second later, he was running down the street.

Editing

I did very little post processing with this image. The lighting was perfect against the cloudy skies and I intentionally under exposed just slightly to keep the sky from blowing out. I increased vibrancy, contrast and shadows.

In my camera bag

Nikon D600 and my Nikon 85 1.8 which is my go to lens that I have had for probably close to 30 years. It’s been an amazing lens.

Feedback

Watch for available light around you and with children, be ready to capture moments that last for just seconds.
