This photo was taken at Bays Mountain Park in Kingsport Tennessee. They have a nice aviary for a small park.Time
It was around 4:30 pm. The sun was low enough to shine directly into the pen.Lighting
The lighting is natural. I waited until the angle of the sun had just cleared the top edge of the roof giving full illumination to the hawk yet keeping the background in shadow.Equipment
I used a Canon 7D with a 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM II. I added a Canon 2x Extender III to produce the depth of field I needed to eliminate the heavy cage wires enclosing the pen. I used a Sunpack Ultra 7000 PRO Tripod with a Sunpack Pistol Grip Ball Head.Inspiration
I love taking photos of birds of any kind in order to study the amazing patterns their feathers create. I especially like "Birds of Prey". Such an amazing display of colors, textures, and geometric patterns in such a small area.Editing
Fortunately, basic corrections in processing the RAW file. I then added an "adjustment layer" in PSE 9 and created a "High Pass" overlay. I finished with a slight vignette.In my camera bag
I have a Lowepro backpack stuffed with my Canon 7d .. an ER 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM III .. an EF 17-40mm f/4L USM .. a Canon EF 2X Extender III .. a Canon ER 75-300 f/4 USM .. and a Canon EFS 18-55 f/4 IS USM. I have a Tiffen GND filter and a Tiffen polarizing filter and a Vello wireless shutter control.Feedback
The general rule to eliminate areas such as wire fences from your foreground is to get as close to the fence or cage as you can. In this case there was a barrier about 3 feet from the enclosure so to compensate for my inability to get close to the wire physically, I used the 2x extender to get close optically.
