Location
Taken in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan at the Lake of the Clouds within the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park this autumn photo was captured looking away from the big lake and instead down the winding Carp River.Time
We arrived to the overlook in the early afternoon after lunch.Lighting
The overcast sky would occasionally tease that it might open up and flood the hills with sun, but thankfully it never did. The soft light light made the landscape as evenly exposed as what I could have hoped for.Equipment
Shot on a Canon 7D Mk II with a 17-40mm f/4L @ 40mm. I should have busted out my tripod in hindsight for a lower ISO and better exposure.Inspiration
Went up to visit my dad and spend some time with him and take autumn photos of the northland. We hiked and drove around for the day, this photo is a pleasant reminder of that time.Editing
The usual sharpening, touch of contrast clarity and saturation/vibrance. I had to push the whites a lot to get them to come through and pop as I had underexposed the shot.In my camera bag
I usually have too much for my backs own good, working on carrying less. Currently it is the 7D MkII 17-40mm f/4L, 24-105mm f/4L IS, 70-200mm f/4L, and my 100mm f/2.8 IS. Square filters I usually take are Lee Little, Big, and Super Stoppers with a 0.6 graduated hard edge. The odds and ends are an intervalometer, lens pen, spare battery, copy of my passport, and ear plugs. You know, the good stuff that saves the day.Feedback
Get out there when the weather is iffy! Bright sunny days are boring and a few clouds make things more dramatic. When the sky is boring it focuses you to look for other parts of the landscape, or to play with time and motion in long exposures.
