Location
For this shoot, we met in early autumn on the beach in The Hague, The Netherlands.Time
We started shooting just before sunset for a different project (for the creation of a dress of sand). After that, when the daylight was gone, we had a break and then moved on to do some water shots.Lighting
We used two flashes with standard reflectors, one right behind the model, the other left of the model. A friend who assisted with the shoot was standing in knee-deep water behind the model, holding the flash. The flash draws the eye to the centre of the photo and at the same time "covers" the model's breasts.Equipment
The photo was taken with a Nikon D800 with a Nikon 85 mm. The two flashes were Jinbei HD600 (radiotriggered).Inspiration
It's a classic... I love how the back-light emphasises each and every droplet. Water is a wonderful medium to visualise action and movement.Editing
Apart from some general corrections, I had to work in Photoshop. A friend who assisted with the shoot was standing in the water behind the model, holding the flash. His face was just recognisable right next to the flash, which was distracting, I had had to remove his face...In my camera bag
What I normally use depends a lot on the shoot. Here I relied on a Nikon D800 with a 85 mm prime (which I like a lot), but I don't think the equipment is critical.Feedback
Water drops light up when the light source is behind or to the side of the water. You may want to instruct the model to arch the back and take the arms back; this way her pose will look nice and her arms do not overlap with the body. For the rest, the timing can be tricky, there will be plenty of fails. Be patient with your model, the hair flick may be more tiring than you think. She was also getting really cold, have a hot drink, a towel and warm clothing at hand.
