We met with the great model Miya Sato on a summer evening around sunset on the beach in Kijkduin, The Hague, in The NetherlandsTime
I preferred a dark background, so we started shooting after sunset.Lighting
If I remember right, I used two Jinbei HD600, one with a softbox, the other with a standard reflector as a rim light. The flashes easily overpower any remaining light.Equipment
Apart from the two flashes Jinbei HD600, I used a Nikon D800 on a tripod with radio trigger.Inspiration
I love to create the impossible, like a dress of sand. This is part of a series "dressed in..."Editing
There's some massive post processing for this photo. The model held the pose without moving for about 40 shots, while a friend threw sand at the model. Numerous photos were layered and masked, thereby creating the dress.In my camera bag
The content of my bag depends a lot on the project, but often the gear is not so relevant. I often use a Nikon D800 with either 24-70mm, 85mm, 70-200mm. Further in my bag are model releases, triggers, batteries.Feedback
If you're doing this for the first time, expect to spend hours in Photoshop. The shoot should be completely manual, as an identical lighting makes the layering easier. Also make sure to have a manual focus and make sure your model does not move at all between the shoots of one series. That's harder for a model than one might expect! Re-focus between series. Good luck!
