Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at Hope Valley, California.

Time

I love the colors on display in the fall. This was taken in the late afternoon in September when the aspen trees are that beautiful tone of yellow and orange.

Lighting

The golden hour before sunset was a perfect time to get good light at the right angle, especially in the midst of these trees.

Equipment

I use a Sony a7iii mirrorless camera with a 16-35mm wide zoom to get the flexibility for most of my landscape images.

Inspiration

I love leading lines and couldn't help but be drawn to this wooden bridge leading right to this cabin in the woods. The bridge really gave this image the depth that it needed and takes your eye on a journey straight to the cabin.

Editing

I used lightroom to draw out the color and to emphasize the leaves on the steps and over the bridge. I also used a gradient brush to dodge and burn areas. I find this helps take the eye to more important parts of the image.

In my camera bag

I generally carry my Sony 70-300m zoom for long reach, the Sony 16-35mm zoom as my go to landscape lens, and a couple of prime lenses. I've got the 50mm Sony/Zeiss 1.4 and the Sony/Zeiss 35mm 1.4 that I use as my faster primes. I always carry extra batteries, lens wipes, my Lee Filter system and an intervalometer for my timelapse work.

Feedback

I generally research on-line before going out. I chase weather conditions or locations based upon what's happening at the time. In this case, I knew that Hope Valley had a lot of aspens that have about a 2 week window of opportunity before the leaves fall. I'd say timing and research really help!
