Location
I took this photo right outside my home in Bergen. I was heading back home after a small evening walk when I spotted these beauties hanging out from the rocks.Time
It's one of the un-planned but extremely loved photo of mine. It was afternoon melting into evening by then. Mosses growing on the rocks in the background made the beauties stand out in the warmth of light with the shades of yellow in the stamens. It's more of the entire mood and the setting that made me click.Lighting
I used the natural lights to photograph this beauty. However while choosing which one to be the centre of attraction, I wanted one to face the light so that it gets the true warmth of the light which went well with the stamens. Any artificial light seemed to kill it's natural texture. I preferred to take the shot side on as to drag the viewer from a color contrast of the background to intricate and delicate beauty of the flower again to it rest of family members lurking in the background.Equipment
I used Canon 450D and Canon 50mm 1.4 primeInspiration
Timing of the day, the melodramatic light infused with the color and texture of the flower was enough as an inspiration. Golden hour as they call it had done the trick. Seen the beauty several times but the appeal was the time and light which made me stop at 'beauty's glance'.Editing
Very little post-processing was needed. A slight cropping to obtain the right frame and small boost in vibrance to allow melodrama.In my camera bag
Normal package always includes Canon 50mm f1.4 prime, Canon 24-105mm and a Canon Mark II body for street photography/portrait/landscape. When mood swings to some tele then I lift up the Canon 100-300 f5.6 barrel and to micro/motion acceleration then I lean over to Canon 100mm f2.8 macro.Feedback
Most important is the love and gel with the subject. Wait for the right time when the beauty is at peak and pay enough attention as how you would like to present the subject in front of your audience. Thoughts should evolve around background to create that little contrast and left to right composition to tell a story.
