Dear Jean: Thanks for your note. The jars are about 5-800 years old and no one knows positively what they were used for, it is a mystery. There have been similar large jars like these found in India and Indonesia. The best guess by knowledgeable scientists is that they were funeral urns. Hope everything is good in Jean's World! :)

Researchers have found similar stone jars in Indonesia and India. The most prominent researcher believes that they were used for burial purposes but that is not certain. I don't think they have ever found evidence to support that idea! Hope all is good for you and your family. Now I am in Serbia, great place, but cold, raining and windy at this moment! :) :)

Dear Lisa: Thanks for writing. I took this photo in 2008 in a remote area of Laos. These large stone jars might have been used as tombs, scientists can't agree. I believe they are about 800 years old and similar jars have been found in India and Indonesia. There were hundreds or maybe over a thousand scattered over the countryside in four different locations. It was a great day of exploration and photography. :) :)
