In a world carrying a plethora of civilisations since time immemorial, nations and empires have striven to build, create and demonstrate craftsmanship in order to mark the uniqueness of their culture. In a world plagued by war and conflict, ancient feudalisms have left their vestiges in walls, ramparts and fortification structures built to protect and defend. If you ever have the chance to walk along the 4.5 Km Venetian wall that encircles Heraklion, you might get tempted to unwind the skein of the city's history embodied in them. They are known as the Venetian Walls in tribute to the Venetian rulers who mostly put the finishing touch and reigned in peace and harmony with the locals, yet history of Heraklion neither began nor ended with the Venetians: early efforts started in the First Byzantine period and were successively continued by Saracens, Venetians and Turk rulers.
Approximately an hour before sunset this image was captured next to Heraklion port and west of the entrance to the Koules fortress. The sun is largely obscured by fast moving clouds, but crepuscular rays find their way earthwards, illuminating sea and distant mountains. All along the 2-Km wall front breakwater structures have been laid out to shore up the defence against Poseidon's rage. These very walls protected a 400-year culture of flourishing arts and trade, endured a 22-year-old siege by the Ottomans and were battered by the German blitz during the Second World War. Yet, they stand strong and with them the spirit, fortitude and resolve of a recently much troubled nation. Who knows... there might be better days ahead.

Thank you Anne... glad you like the photo and that it trends quite well from what I see. It all happened within half an hour. Sea, sun and clouds conspired and inspired me to take the photo. Lucky!

Thanks Kristina! I was very lucky with this shot. Just as I had packed up and was ready to leave the harbour when I noticed the scene. Camera and lenses came out of the bag in a flash...
