Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Namibia, in a conservation park for cheetahs.

Time

It was very early in the morning around seven o'clock the best time for them to run due to the relatively low temperatures.

Lighting

The light was not so beautiful at that time (sun rises around five o'clock, so we're quite far from low sunrise light) anyway it was enough intense to permit me to shoot very fast in order to freeze that incredibly fast animal.

Equipment

I used a full fram Canon 6D camera plus a canon 70-200 f4 L lens plus a 1.4 sigma multiplier

Inspiration

It's really difficult to give the idea of how much they're fast if you don't see it: so I decided to try freezing a lateral movement. I think it's enough clear the impact of cheetah's feet on the sand. It's like a bullet hitting the ground. Moreover you can observe the non retractable claws: it's necessary to ensure the proper grip during the run (and the hunting).

Editing

Nothing special: just black and white and some minimal correction in the background. The choice of using B&W is due to the fact that the scene was almost completely yellowish but playing with curves and tone I think that the animal pop-up more evidently.

In my camera bag

I prefer to shoot with prime lenses, normally one tele 135 f2 and one standard 35 f1.4. Anyway travelling I always have with me my zoom tele 70-200 and my wide angle 17-40 f4.

Feedback

I'm not an action photographer (actually I'm not a photographer), anyway I think that freezing an image like this is more important than having a perfect zero digital noise: so high, or relatively high, ISO and no more than 1/1000s. Shoot continuously possibly focusing on the subject. And good luck
