Interior of a Ladakhi nomad home-tent. The objects in the bowls in the foreground are dung ~ goat dung and yak dung ~ used for fuel for the fire.The woman standing is the mother of the child to the left and the baby being held by the bearded man on the right who is the grandfather.Three generations live, eat , sleep together in this one room tent. For a few months in winter, when the temperatures reach -40 degrees Celsius, they dwell in rock walled homes with the animals in underground pens. The rest of the year they move in a series of camps, dictated by grazing needs of their animals, and water sources. In these high altitude arid land in the mountains, they survive and live out their lives in incredibly harsh conditions, with an undaunted spirit of life. I was embraced by their smiles and welcomes.
