Fall Drops

The rains have finally arrived. The leaves have started to change colors and fall from the trees. Glorious!

It's difficult to find good imagery looking through new photos on VB. Every once in awhile an image catches my eye. I stop scrolling and stare at it. This is one of those images. This is one of my favorite images ever on VB. Great shot!

What a wonderful comment to see! Made my day! Thanks Jeff.

Behind The Lens

This image was taken at Van Dusen Botanical Gardens in Vancouver, BC. Canada. I have a membership and go often. No matter the time of year there is always something magical to photograph.
I took a series of images around 2:30 in the afternoon. I was visiting the garden researching locations for an upcoming fashion/fantasy shoot. It was a beautiful autumn day and it had just finished raining. When I saw these leaves floating in a pool of water covered in raindrops, everything came to a standstill and I spent the next hour immersed in trying to capture what I was seeing.
The sun was lower in the sky and there was still clouds from the recent rains. The light was filtered, and there was these amazing reflections of the clouds.
Nikon D7200, Nikon 50mm, F11, ISO 500, 1/200s. I tried a few shots with flash, but then I would lose the amazing reflections. That is why my ISO was at 500. I was shooting handheld in order to get the angle I wanted, and their was a slight breeze so the leaves where moving.
I am always on the lookout for reflections. This was a perfect situation. Beautiful autumn leaves covered in raindrops, floating on water, with an amazing sky reflected in the water.
I always start in Adobe Raw Editor where I start my processing. From there it is into Photoshop CC. From there the fun begins. I have a host of plug in programs including OnOne, Topaz, and Alienskin to name a few. I usually apply a plug in and then layer it in Photoshop, changing opacity and blending mode until I get something that is pleasing to me.
In my camera bag
My Nikon D7200, Nikon 18-105, Nikon 50mm, Nikon 105 Macro, Sigma 10-20, (2) Nikon SB700 Flashes, my Sigma 150-500 if I am birding, my Nikon 300 if I don't have my big lens with me, my ND Filters if I am doing water, and my Sony A6000. No matter what, too much stuff, but I dread not having the right lens with me.
Get out as much as you can, and be prepared for unexpected situations. I always have my tripod and ND Filters even if I have my smaller kit with me. I usually have a reason I am heading out, but I don’t get so single focused that I miss these rare opportunities when nature paints with magic. Be adaptable and open to what is around you.
