Zaanse Schans (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈzaːnsə ˈsxɑns]) is a neighbourhood of Zaandam, near Zaandijk, The Netherlands. It has a collection of well-preserved historic windmills (16 in total) and houses. From 1961 to 1974 old buildings from all over the Zaanstreek (NL) were relocated using lowboy trailers to the area. The Zaans Museum, established in 1994, is located in the Zaanse Schans too.
The Zaanse Schans is one of the popular tourist attractions of the Netherlands and an anchor point of ERIH, the European Route of Industrial Heritage. The neighbourhood attracted approximately 1.6 million visitors in 2014.
In the 17-th century was Holland one of the most important countries in the world (maybe even THE most important). The trading business and spirit are mostly seen as the important issues, but one forgets the importance of the mills. Holland had many thousands of the state of the art mills, making it an important industrial country with many megawatts of power.

Thank you Deanne. Most captures are made from the other side (with the river The Zaan in front). Maybe.... one day ;) .

Wonderful image. I've always wished that these plastic wrapped hay bales....as essential and practical as they are...were never invented. I live in farming country, myself, and have lamented their presence in the midst of otherwise beautiful landscapes. Their attempts to make them blend in by coloring them a strange "green" doesn't help much more than the white ones in my part of the world. Nevertheless, this is a wonderful shot...beautifully composed and technically perfect! I love it! And it needs the vast field on the right side to "off-balance" it and give it the critical expansiveness...even with the green hay bales! Nice work!

Graag..... Ik wilde eens een ander standpunt dan de anderen. We moeten toch samen nog een keertje teruggaan.... Ik heb wel meer foto's die eerst doorkijken, denk ik.
