Behind The Lens

Location

We were on vacation on the island of Tenerife and visited the Auditorio de Tenerife there. The building was designed by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. In the meantime it is already regarded as the symbol of the capital of the island of Tenerife

Time

I usually plan photo excursions meticulously to find beautiful lighting at the photo spot. In that case we met up with friends in the middle of the day. Unfortunately it didn't work out again at a later date. So I was all the happier that I had at least an impressive cloudy sky available.

Lighting

For the recording I used a polarizing filter and was able to work out the clouds from the blue sky even more. Unfortunately, the natural light didn't provide any more.

Equipment

The picture is a bit older, back then I was still taking photos with a Canon EOS 450D. As a lens I had the Sigma 10-22mm f4.0 and a polarizing filter on it.

Inspiration

The architecture of Santiago Calatrava is world famous, I couldn't leave the island without taking a picture of the auditorium. The building is so different in shape, you can read a lot into it and try it out photographically.

Editing

I made minor corrections in Photoshop Elements and converted it to black and white. I also increased the contrast a little so that both the building and the sky come into their own.

In my camera bag

On photo tours I have my Canon EOS 70D with me along with the Tokina 11-16mm f2.8, the Canon 70-200mm f2.8 and the Canon 50mm F1.8. In addition, a few memory cards, filters and often I also need my tripod.

Feedback

The more you invest in the research, the more top perspectives you will find. And then it is important to find the angles and views that are not often seen of the subject. Play with aperture and shutter speed and try to create a new picture with your own personal style.
