I had set up “camp” early yesterday morning on “Little Mountain” outside of Parksville, Vancouver Island when this female Spruce Grouse came by attracted by the seeds I had strewn around. They prefer to walk on the ground or tree limbs rather than fly and rely on camouflage and immobility to an amazing degree letting people come to within a few feet, a behavior that has earned it the nickname "fool's hen".
